RIT photography alumnus Jonathan White curates seventh exhibition
Fraternities share a deep commitment toward development of individual members as well as the entire chapter and Jonathan White has never forgotten his Greek experience as a member of Alpha Epsilon Pi at Rochester Institute of Technology.
White earned his bachelor’s degree in professional photography at RIT in 1983, but still supports his alma mater by showcasing the vast creative talents of his brotherhood in gallery exhibitions—the first held at La MaMa La Galleria in Manhattan in 1994.
The seventh annual exhibition, “A Fraternity of Artists,” begins with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13 at 1570 Gallery, located at Valley Manor Apartments, 1570 East Ave. The show runs through Feb. 17.
There are 24 artists in the “fraternity” who will be demonstrating an eclectic and diverse array of art media including photography, painting, metal art, sculpture, woodwork, glass, illustration and film.
“We even have a table designed from a motorcycle by a current RIT student, Spencer Jason,” says White, a photographer, digital artist and curator of the exhibition.
“Artists need a lot of help and fraternities carry the tradition of looking out for one another,” White believes. “For RIT student artists, this may be their first experience in showcasing their work and it’s exiting for us to think we could play a part in launching their careers.”
White says the next “Fraternity of Artists” exhibition will be held at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in August 2013.
“We are excited about returning to Manhattan, but my dream is to have a not-for-profit organization with a permanent gallery of our own. It would support the talented members of our fraternity and give them the exposure that they deserve.”
